Effects of Incivility

Effects of Incivility

How may incivility affect someone?

If someone is uncivil towards you or you witness incivility towards someone else, you may feel uncomfortable. People who have experienced incivility may feel sad, embarrassed, or anxious. They can get headaches or stomachaches. It may affect the person’s confidence in themselves. They might not want to go back the next day. If a student experiences incivility it can affect their learning and the quality of services they provide to their clients. They may feel badly about that treatment setting or even their ability to become a good OT.
When a student has experienced incivility, their first instinct may be to keep it to themselves. Asking for help may make them feel embarrassed or that they are not doing well in their fieldwork. They may be afraid the person they talk to will react poorly, blame them for the situation or think badly of them. They may not want get upset or cry, so they avoid talking about it.
