When having a conversation with your CI about incivility, keep the following things in mind:
1. Bring it up when you both have some time to talk. This can be during a time when no clients are scheduled or your regular meeting time, if you have one. Having a serious discussion when either of you is feeling pressed for time should be avoided.
2. Talk in a safe place that will keep the conversation confidential.
3. Have the conversation when you can calmly bring up the topic. Your approach should be neutral and professional.
4. Take the time to think about how you want to come across during the conversation. This could mean that instead of addressing an uncivil comment or gesture in the moment, you wait until you have been in touch with how you are feeling and can avoid reacting defensively. In doing this, you are more likely to have to get your point across and have a better talk.
5. You will learn more and learn better in a respectful environment. Bringing up your concerns is a sign of weakness or a cause for embarrassment.
